Research in any area requires access to appropriate resources. The Foundation is helping develop them in and for Somaliland.

To learn about organisms, students need to work with them, not just read about them. This requires teaching laboratories, teaching approaches that encourage engagement, and sufficient class time. The Foundation is working in all three areas.

Add to What is Known
Very little is known about Somaliland's biodiversity. There are new species to be discovered, but more information is also needed on the distribution and ecology of almost all its species. Acquiring such information requires a combination of fieldwork, data recording, data sharing, and the preparation of research articles. .

Increase access
We use three websites to increase access to information about Somaliland's biodiversity. This site includes a database of new and hard to discover print resources; OpenHerbarium provides information about Somaliland's plants; and OpenZooMuseum information about its animals. OpenHerbarium also shares information with GBIF.

Increased awareness of Somaliland's biodiversity and how human activities affect it is essential for improving the livelihood of its people. The Foundation is increasing its activities in this area through documentation and monitoring challenges that are open to individuals or groups. These will use cell phone images to share information.
